A major rap star may have dodged some serious drug and weapons charges in Yuma County. Dwayne Carter, also known as Lil Wayne, cut a deal with prosecutors that could help him avoid serious prison time.
Lil Wayne pleaded guilty to one count of possession of a dangerous drug, and in return prosecutors dropped all other charges against him, including several felonies. The charges stem from January 2008, when Drug Enforcement Administration agents found marijuana, cocaine, and ecstasy on Wayne's tour bus during a search at a U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint near Dateland. The agents also found a .40 caliber pistol registered to Lil Wayne.
Lil Wayne pleaded guilty to having of ecstasy in a backpack. A crime such as this could carry a penalty of more than two years in prison. Instead, he likely faces three years probation. Lil Wayne's attorney, James Tilson, sees the plea deal as a win for the rapper.
Tilson says, "The plea agreement will allow him to continue on. He will be able to travel and pursue his career as he did before. The terms of his probation do not restrict him in his ability to travel and to tour musically."Lil Wayne is currently serving an 8-month sentence in New York for a separate weapon charge. He will be sentenced in Yuma on June 30, 2010.
